Minimum Qualifications

●             A terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented in the department.
●             A record of excellence in teaching, research, and service commensurate with the rank of a tenured faculty member.
●             Previous administrative experience with demonstrated leadership success at the program level or above.
●             Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
●             Experience and demonstrated success in budget management.

●             Full professor status.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

●             Being an active member of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA) leadership team.
●             Collaborating with faculty on a strategic vision to advance the department at the college, university, regional, national, and international level.
●             Recruiting, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating a multidisciplinary faculty. 
●             Managing department budget and resources.
●             Continuing to develop a successful and diverse faculty and staff and foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.
●             Guiding curriculum development.
●             Providing leadership to complete the annual assessment of program and student learning outcomes.
●             Working with the department faculty to increase the retention and graduation rates of students. 
●             Seeking external funding.
●             Overseeing and maintaining multiple departmental facilities.
●             Maintaining currency in their discipline.
●             Teaching one course per semester.
●             Maintaining NASAD accreditation.
●             Performing other duties as assigned by the Dean.

The department seeks an experienced and visionary leader who can guide our dynamic faculty in a positive and effective learning environment. The successful candidate will have an innovative approach to the issues facing higher education and an invested commitment to shared governance in the areas of resource allocation, curriculum development, and faculty and staff development and mentoring.  They will also have a broad knowledge of theories and practices relating to the creation and production of images, objects, and experiences to support a multidisciplinary faculty in their teaching, research, and creative and professional activity. They must support an inclusive environment and a socially just and equitable culture.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts (FAA), the Chair will act as advocate and liaison between the upper administration and faculty, staff, and students. The Chair is also supported by two Assistant Chairs who focus on curriculum, course scheduling, and student experience.

Description of the Department or Unit

The Art Department is NASAD-accredited and has over 40 full-time faculty members and nearly 850 undergraduate majors. It offers BFA degrees in Graphic Design, Studio Art, and Art Education; a BA degree with concentrations in Art History, Art Management, and Studio Art; and BS degrees in Commercial Photography and Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology. The department has an honors program and a departmental gallery and is affiliated with Mountaineer Press, a student-run print shop that serves the printing needs of the university community. The Art Department is situated in five buildings and has several full and part-time support staff, including a building technician and two administrative assistants.
