The Department of English, housed in the College of Arts & Sciences at Appalachian State University, seeks applications for the position of chairperson. The chair administers the academic, advising, personnel, and budgetary affairs for over 450 majors, 42 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and 51 non-tenure track faculty. The chair is on an eleven-month appointment, has a 1/1 teaching load in her or his specialty, and is supported by two administrative assistants and two assistant chairs. Our department offers a B. A. with concentrations in film studies, creative writing, technical and professional writing, and literary studies. We also offer a B. S. for teaching licensure as well as an English M. A. with optional concentrations in Rhetoric and Composition and in College Teaching. The Department of English has a firm commitment to democratic decision making, excellence in teaching, active scholarship, and university and community service. The department has a central role in the general education curriculum of the university. 

We seek a chair with strong interpersonal and organizational skills who will be a vigorous advocate for the department and who understands the current issues in the discipline. Candidates must hold a terminal degree in English or in a related field; must have already achieved tenure; and must possess a proven commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Candidates are expected to have significant experience in academic administration and to have demonstrated leadership abilities. The appointment starts July 1, 2018.
