The College of Arts & Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor, a three-year position in Appalachian Studies.

The position would support undergraduate and graduate instruction. This work includes teaching three courses per semester and coordinating the MA in Appalachian Studies degree, including recruiting students. Recruitment duties include arranging campus visits for prospective MA students, advising applicants about important deadlines, and reviewing all graduate applications.

We seek a faculty member who is an effective communicator, collaborator, and advocate for Appalachian Studies. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to work well across academic programs and disciplines. Candidates should have a successful record of teaching, advising, and research related to the Appalachian region. Candidates should hold the Ph.D. or terminal degree in a field related to American traditional music; should have excellent organizational skills; a proven commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and regional service; and leadership abilities. The appointment starts July 1, 2018.  Applications from underrepresented populations are encouraged. 

Position duties include: 

• Organizing recruiting strategies for the MA program.

• Guiding MA applicants through the Graduate School's admission process and serving as liaison to ASU's Gratis D. Williams Graduate School.

• Advising graduate students of deadlines and requirements for comprehensive exams, theses, internships, scholarships, and assistantships.

• Providing first-year orientation and professional development workshops for students.

• Planning for student participation in annual Appalachian Studies Association conferences.

• Coordinating with academic programs on campus to develop a schedule of Appalachian Studies classes each fall and spring semester.

• Advising undergraduate minors, graduate minors, and graduate certificate students.
