Assistant Professor - Commercial Photography Program

The Art Department at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month faculty position in the Commercial Photography Program at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. Required qualifications include an MFA degree in photography or a related field. Five or more years of current or recent commercial photography experience, beyond the assistant level as lead photographer or similar principal position, in the field of commercial studio photography is required. Prior teaching experience will be looked upon favorably but is not required. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in two or more of the following areas: studio strobe lighting, Photoshop and digital retouching, fashion photography, product photography, video production/post-production.
The successful candidate will articulate and/or demonstrate an understanding of photography as a visual language and as a means of expression, a philosophy of teaching commercial photography, a forward-thinking commercial practice, and the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
Position responsibilities include: teaching three courses per semester which could include, Photoshop and digital retouching, studio lighting, fashion photography, product photography, business of photography, history of photography, introductory and intermediate photography courses, and special topics or thematic courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Additional responsibilities include an ongoing professional and/or creative research in the field of photography, participation on departmental/university committees, advising students, cage/studio management, industry networking for program and student advancement, and seeking interdisciplinary collaborations with other programs and departments within the university structure.
Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Commercial Photography program, which places emphasis on applied professional photography, is dynamic and growing with approximately 130 majors.
