App State’s winter break closure will begin Monday, Dec. 25, 2023, and campus will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024.
This year's closure includes one weekday that is not covered by state holidays — Friday, Dec. 29 — and requires staff to apply personal leave.
As in previous years, in lieu of applying accrued personal leave for these days and with supervisor approval, employees may:
- Participate in professional development.
- Utilize Community Service Leave by volunteering in the community.
- Work remotely, if applicable.
Professional Development
LinkedIn Learning is now available to all App State faculty and staff at no cost — it includes thousands of high-quality professional development courses and videos that cover a wide variety of topics.
- Activate your account (Free, on-demand, remote access to all faculty and staff members).
- We have already researched strategic keywords to get you started, including leadership, Google Apps, organization and more — see our Winter Break Keyword Search handout (PDF) for details.
- Or, create your own plan with your supervisor. Note: The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that agreed-upon work is completed.

Community Service
Each year, App State employees receive 24 hours of Community Service Leave.
The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership, in the Division of Student Affairs, maintains a list of community partners with volunteer opportunities at which employees can use community service leave.
Remote Work
Employees may work remotely if productive work is available to perform remotely and with supervisor approval.
Note: Remote work on these days does not require approval beyond the immediate supervisor; however, the supervisor is responsible for ensuring that agreed-upon work is completed.
