Do we have to conduct interviews if candidate is an internal in our dept?

Yes, all applicants need to be evaluated consistently and fairly by using the same interview questions and methods.

Are Zoom interviews allowable?

Absolutely. Interviewing via web conferencing saves time, expenses, and can be recorded to allow all members to view and to cast their vote/feedback. However, please notify the applicant if you plan on recording the interview and who it will be shared with.

What if current committee member is listed as a reference?

It is a conflict of interest and not recommended for a committee member to serve as a reference as well. Please ask the candidate for additional references if necessary and notate that the committee member did not serve as a reference. It is important also that the committee member only uses information from the search to evaluate the candidate and remains unbiased.

Applicant wants to know who is on the search committee prior to interviewing

Only the Search Committee Chair is public knowledge. The committee can determine to disclose their names, but it is best practice to only share contact information for the Chair.

How do you treat internal and external candidates the same?

You don't have to get hotel rooms for internal candidates, however they should be treated fairly as far as dinner arrangements go, campus tours etc. They can decline a campus tour, but you can offer it.
