Semester Break and Winter Break Closure

Posted 12/11/20 at 1:00 p.m.

As we quickly approach the extended semester break and our annual scheduled winter break closure, we want to remind everyone of the university’s operational schedule and options for staff during this period.

As communicated in recent weekly campus updates, the university's annual winter break closure will be Dec. 24 – Jan. 1.

Reduced Operations

From 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 11 through Jan. 11, we will work to limit on-campus activity to the extent possible to support an extended period of energy and cost savings. During this period, staff will continue to work, either remotely or on campus, based on the requirements of their respective positions. We will maximize teleworking for staff whose positions support it. Staff whose work cannot be performed remotely will continue to work on campus.

As a reminder, the temperature in most campus buildings will be reduced to 55 degrees and access will be limited during this time. We encourage everyone to support this important energy and cost-saving initiative by closely following Facilities Operations’ recommendations for maximizing energy savings for all times that you will not be occupying your offices. That guidance can be found on the Facilities Operations website.

Winter Break Closure

This year’s winter break closure (Dec. 24 – Jan. 1) includes two days that are not covered by holidays and require staff to apply personal leave (Dec. 30 and 31). As in past years, in lieu of applying personal leave for these two days, staff may:

  • Telework, with approval of their supervisors.

  • Utilize Community Service Leave by volunteering in the community. The university’s ACT Office maintains a list of community partners with volunteer needs.

  • Engage in online professional development. The Office of Human Resources Learning and Organizational Development Department will provide a listing of available online offerings and instructions for accessing them prior to the start of the winter break closure.

Staff Leave Options

For any staff who cannot work due to COVID-19-related reasons, we continue to have leave options available through Dec. 31. Read a summary of these options and eligibility requirements here. Please contact the Office of Human Resources with questions or for assistance, and watch for updates from the Office of Human Resources regarding leave options available beginning Jan. 1

Holiday Safety

Please remember to be vigilant in following the latest public health guidance at all times. We encourage you to follow the NCDHHS guidance for the winter holidays.

We continue to be thankful for all of you.
