This policy provides consistent practice for engaging unpaid volunteers, reducing risk and protecting the interests of the University and its volunteers.
Procedures:
- Department initiates form (if you have multiple volunteers, you may attach a spreadsheet)
- Form routes electronically to Human Resources for review
- Human Resources will review to determine if the activity is employment or a true volunteer activity pursuant to the FLSA and then make a determination if background checks are needed
- Human Resources routes form to the Office of General Counsel (OGC) with information regarding their review so OGC can provide the appropriate volunteer documentation for signatures.
- Department will be provided with appropriate volunteer documentation for them to send to volunteers for signatures
- Department is responsible for maintaining the signed forms in their office files for 7 years from the date of the event
- Volunteer Policy & Request Form (online form located at the bottom of the policy to be completed by requesting department)
