App State’s winter break closure will begin Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, and campus will reopen Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.
This year's closure includes three weekdays not covered by state holidays — Friday, Dec. 27, Monday, Dec. 30 and Tuesday, Dec. 31 — and requires staff to apply personal leave.
As in previous years, in lieu of applying accrued personal leave for these days and with supervisor approval, employees may:
Participate in professional development.
Utilize Community Service Leave by volunteering in the community.
Work remotely, if applicable.
Professional Development
A variety of professional development is available to App State faculty and staff — most at no cost. These include Academic Impressions, LinkedIn Learning and more.
Note: Professional development on these days does not require approval beyond the immediate supervisor; however, the supervisor is responsible for ensuring that agreed-upon work is completed.
Community Service
Each year, App State employees receive 24 hours of Community Service Leave. The Office of Community-Engaged Leadership, in the Division of Student Affairs, maintains a list of community partners with volunteer opportunities at which employees can use community service leave.
This year, employees received an additional 16 hours specific to storm-related activities to expire on Dec. 31, 2024. Employees should obtain prior approval from their supervisor and will be responsible for providing documentation that additional hours used are storm-related, according to institutional HR office guidelines.
Remote Work
Employees may work remotely if productive work is available to perform remotely and with supervisor approval.
Note: Remote work on these days does not require approval beyond the immediate supervisor; however, the supervisor is responsible for ensuring that agreed-upon work is completed.
