We are pleased to let you know that we recently received updated guidance from the UNC System extending several current COVID-19 leave programs through June 30, 2021 and adding new provisions related to COVID-19 vaccinations. In addition, we want to make you aware of a new well-being campaign recently launched by the UNC System Office.
Pay and Leave Updates
The following leave programs previously extended through March 31, 2021 have now been extended through June 30,2021:
- Interchangeable use of available sick leave, vacation leave and bonus leave for absences related to COVID-19.
- Up to 160 hours of COVID-19 Paid Administrative Leave for certain COVID-19-related absences.
- Authority to continue operating our COVID-19 Shared Leave Bank.
- Expanded Community Service Leave options.
In addition, the updated guidance includes the following new provisions:
- Employees may use paid work time to receive the COVID-19 vaccine during their regular work hours, with approval of their supervisors. This may not exceed eight hours in any single day and applies to both first and second doses of vaccines requiring two doses.
- COVID-19 Paid Administrative Leave may be applied if an employee experiences a reaction to their COVID-19 vaccine that prevents them from returning to work either on the day of the vaccine or the following day. Absences related to adverse reactions to the vaccine beyond the day after receiving the vaccine require application of accrued personal leave. This provision may be applied retroactively to qualifying absences occurring January 1, 2021 or later.
A detailed summary of these extended options and criteria for their use has been posted to the Office of Human Resources COVID-19 website under “Leave Information.”
UNC System Well-Being Campaign
On February 19, the UNC System Office launched a new well-being campaign entitled “If it Matters to You, it Matters.” The campaign will include a monthly series of email communications highlighting available resources focused primarily on emotional wellness, mental health, and resilience for faculty and staff. The initial communication in the series includes a video message from UNC System President Hans, emphasizing the importance of self-care. Information about the well-being campaign and the first communication in the series can be accessed from the Office of Human Resources COVID-19 website by clicking on the “Resilience During COVID” button. Please take time to view President Hans’ message and other important information in the communication.
As always, please contact the Office of Human Resources at 828-262-3187 or human-resources@appstate.edu with questions or for assistance.
