Competency Development

The UNC System defines the functional competencies for various SHRA administrative and business roles. Developing and advancing competencies is an essential component of this program, supporting both personal and professional growth. Competencies include: financial management, problem solving, managing work, records and business administration, decision making, written communication, and verbal communication.

Campus Engagement

App State prioritizes employee collaboration and a team-oriented community of employees. This program aims to facilitate employee engagement and build institutional knowledge through networking and connection. To complete this program, you will attend three (3) campus connections, two (2) Chancellor’s Staff Connects, and four (4) university-wide staff meetings. University-wide staff meetings include Chancellor Faculty and Staff meetings, Finance and Administration meetings, Staff Senate meetings, and cross-departmental Business Officer meetings. Not included are individual unit/office staff meetings.

Operational and Technical Knowledge

Administrative and business professionals play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of campus operations. The BASE program includes training in key operational areas to ensure employees understand university policies, follow established procedures, and contribute to a culture of accountability and service excellence.

System and Software Training

App State is a large and complex campus that utilizes numerous systems and software platforms. Enhancing your understanding and use of role-specific software is a key part of the BASE program. When you enroll in BASE, you will complete an assessment with your supervisor to identify systems and software trainings to better equip you to meet the needs of your department.

Final Project

To demonstrate skills and knowledge gained through this program, you will complete a final project that is relevant to your job role and department. At the beginning of the program, you (in conjunction with your supervisor) will identify a need in your department that is relevant to your current or aspired administrative role. You will submit a final reference guide outlining the process, project or event you developed or revised to address a departmental need.
