Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Crisis Resources

Employees have a variety of resources available to help address mental health, substance abuse or other concerns. App State encourages members of the campus community to make use of available campus and community counseling, and medical and rehabilitation resources. We can assure people who voluntarily take advantage of these services that applicable professional standards of confidentiality will be observed.

  • Univesity Ombuds - Provides an independent, confidential environment for faculty, staff and students of the Appalachian community to discuss campus related concerns or problems
  • Intermittent Family Medical Leave - Contact the Leave Administrator in the Office of Human Resources for guidance. 
  • Counseling for Faculty and Staff Center - Provides free, confidential counseling for individuals virtually or in-person.
  • Employee Assistance Program - Provides free, short-term counseling services for individuals to help you and your dependents handle concerns constructively before they become major issues. App State's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services are provided through ComPsych. Click the Register tab and use the Organization Web ID: appstate.
  • Counseling Services through NC Health Plan - Visit Psychology Today to search for approved therapists in the network. Co-payment may apply.

Emergency or Crisis Situations

Managers may want to use or share information about the following emergency services when concerned about an employee's safety. 

  • 911 for emergency intervention

  • Mobile Crisis: Daymark - 866-275-9552 - Daymark provides mobile crisis services in our area. Individuals in crisis can call or someone can call on their behalf to request that Mobile Crisis visit the person to assess for safety and mental health needs.

  • Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline - Call 988 or text HOME to 741741
