Background Checks effective February 1, 2010

Appalachian State University is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its students, staff, university visitors, and constituents, as well as a setting in which the University's assets are protected. To that end, it is the policy of the University that all employment offers for vacancies posted on or after February 1, 2010 are subject to the University's receipt of a satisfactory criminal background report, in order to facilitate informed hiring decisions. All final candidates for SHRA staff, EHRA/Non-Faculty, EHRA/Faculty, and Non-Student Temporary are subject to background checks.

Background checks are used only to evaluate candidates for employment purposes and will not be used to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, sex, gender identity and expression, political affiliation, age, disability, veteran's status, or sexual orientation.

A criminal conviction does not in and of itself prevent an applicant from being employed by the University. The nature of some convictions, however, may cause certain positions to be unavailable to the applicant. Failure to completely disclose information about a criminal conviction on an employment application is considered falsification of the employment application and may result in the applicant not being eligible for employment at the University.

Before criminal records verification can be obtained, a Background Check Disclosure and Release form (PDF, 178 KB) must be signed by the applicant and on file with Human Resource Services-Employment. All finalists are responsible for submitting form promptly to the office of Human Resources-Employment via:
