Background Checks effective February 1, 2010

Appalachian State University is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its students, staff, university visitors, and constituents, as well as a setting in which the University's assets are protected. All employment offers for vacancies are subject to the University's receipt of a satisfactory criminal background report, in order to facilitate informed hiring decisions. All final candidates for SHRA staff, EHRA/Non-Faculty, EHRA/Faculty, and Non-Student Temporary positions are subject to background checks.

Background checks are used only to evaluate candidates for employment purposes and will not be used to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, sex, gender identity and expression, political affiliation, age, disability, veteran's status, or sexual orientation.

A criminal conviction does not in and of itself prevent an applicant from being employed by the University. The nature of some convictions, however, may cause certain positions to be unavailable to the applicant. Failure to completely disclose information about a criminal conviction on an employment application is considered falsification of the employment application and may result in the applicant not being eligible for employment at the University.

Finalists who have applied through AppState Careers (PeopleAdmin):

The University utilizes a web-based system to initiate and process background checks. To begin the process, finalists who have applied through AppState Careers (PeopleAdmin) will receive a separate email from our vendor, InfoMart. InfoMart is an investigative screening agency which conducts a variety of consumer reports, including background checks. The email will provide finalists with a link to a secure website where finalist completes the background check process online. The Office of Human Resources requests candidate’s timely completion of the request in order to prevent delays to the consideration process.

Finalists who have applied outside of AppState Careers (People Admin):

All finalists who have applied outside of  AppState Careers (PeopleAdmin) must complete a Background Check Disclosure and Release form (PDF, 178 KB) prior to criminal records being obtained. The Background Check Disclosure and Release form must be signed by the applicant and on file with Human Resource Services-Employment. All finalists for faculty positions are responsible for submitting criminal background check release form to Academic Affairs at the same time they submit their contract. All other finalists are responsible for submitting form promptly to the office of Human Resources-Employment via:
